Jeannine Buck of Abbottsford, British Columbia, Canada was clicking pictures from a Cessna airplane above Vancouver’s Stanley Park when the incident occurred last Monday night. Apparently, the smartphone dropped from a height of 2,500 feet from the sky. She was flying around Vancouver and taking pictures out the window when the wind slipped it from her grasp. “My first thought was: ‘What? Did that really just happen?” Buck told Abbottsford News. However, she did not give up on her iPhone 5s. Buck decided to try her luck anyway with the Find My iPhone feature on a friend’s phone to pinpoint the general area where it landed. They called her smartphone to track it down via her ringtone, which she said she changed that morning to Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” “I had just changed the ringtone [that] morning from ‘Stayin’ Alive.’ I’ve since changed in back in honor of the phone’s will to live,” she told the News. They eventually came across her smartphone in the “middle of the forest in Stanley Park” where it suffered minor damages. However, otherwise it appeared to be in working condition. Prior to this incident, Buck said that her friend had warned her to not bring her smartphone too close to the window. “I had no idea the wind would grab it from my hand. Lesson learned for sure. I won’t be taking pictures on a plane beside an open window ever again, that’s for certain!”
